OPM @ Space – 15th June 2007

On June 15, 2007, in RnB, Space (Sydney), Trance, by J T

Sexy Black

Lead up:
Brojo invited me the night before. Plus it was free before 12 if you wore black. Oh, and plus he invited girls.

About Space :
Located above shark bar on Liverpool St. You enter via the elevators from ground floor . On entry you see a square floor the width of the DJ area to the left. A bit hard to picture, i know. To the right there are stairs downstairs, some pool tables and some lounges as well. A bar is in front of you separating you from the other side

There is also a bigger room on the other side. The guys put wood platform over the entire floor with enough room to hold a few hundred people. The DJ area is actually a stage area. The room looks like a mini school assembly hall.

About OPM Friday nights:
$20 entry unless you get in on guestlist before 10:30/11pm. Tonight was a special one off whereby anybody wearing “sexy black” could get in before 12 with a promo pass. Otherwise $20 you must cough up. The crowd is dominantly Asian.

General Atmosphere: Young crowd (or maybe its just me), but a bit less seedy. However there is no anti smoking policy and no outdoor area to have a ciggie. So everyone smokes inside, mostly in the small room.

Little area: Pretty desolate if you came for the house and trance. At any one time, you can find no more then 3 or 4 people raving about. most of them were scared of the relatively bright lights and the subsequent attention received if one ventured onto the floor. Most, if opted to dance, practised their foot techniques on the surrounding carpeted area. Lack of an MC in the trance area also dampened spirits.

Big area: Tonight had a small wooden platform island in the middle of the floor. It could fit 5 or 6 people, and its pretty good. It diverts the attention seekers from the front to the middle. It also encourages the girls to showoff their stuff. I personally liked that idea.

Music:
Before 12, only the small room is open, and it plays RNB. Once the big room opens, almost everyone moves to the bigger room, and the small room plays trance.

The bigger room plays RnB from midnight onwards. One DJ plays the whole set (I think) and so there is less repetitive music. Expect your typical rnb songs to be played.

My experiences: us as a group basically hung with each other all night. I did a trance song or two on the small room floor but it didn’t really help in terms of encouraging others. Meiny danced with joe and I partnered with selvy most of the time. it wasn’t boring but in hindsight it wasn’t spectacular either, but it was fun making new friends, we left around 1.30 and the girls promised my whinging ass they’d take me clubbing again (I wanted to go all night as usual).

Summary: the blandness of Space can be offset by fun friends. The black theme sort of worked, but the whole place was dark anyway. Came home smelling like ciggies again, yuck. Still a good place to go if you only like asian crowds.
