It’s our last day in New Zealand, and we got to be at the airport at 4am – So instead of sleeping, we have decided to pull an all nighter clubbing! Excellent plan, I say. We actually asked a taxi driver where drunk people can be found on a Saturday night and he highly recommended Club 22. After the disappointment of a dud club/bar last night, we hope tonight is better, so here we go!

with a local

Saturdays @ Club 22, Papanui, Christchurch, New Zealand

Assessment Time: 11:00 PMish – 1:30AM
Opening Hours: 8:00PM – 2:00AM
Lockout: Unknown, but we were told at 1:30 we were not allowed back in if we left.
Address: 22 Harewood Road, Papanui, Christchurch, New Zealand
Venue Website: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Club-22/121971104547871 There are no other websites.
Promoter Website: Self Promoted
Occurrence: Every Saturday since the club opened in April 2011. Club 22 is also open on Thursdays, Fridays as well.
Outside Line: I don’t recall any line there. We got in after showing our Australian Passports. Security were friendly enough to give us some flack for being Aussie 🙂
Dress Code / Door Policy: The dress code was promoted as casual. Pretty much anyone can get in wearing their pajamas if they wanted to. Most people dressed casually or dressed smart casual. There were a handful of guys who had top hats. Marty has my punk wig on and it seems to be accepted. After 5 minutes inside the club I got asked by a second security guard if I was allowed in with wearing of my pirate hat, and I said yes. I was pretty sure I was targeted for being too sexy. So the hat policy is questionable.
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: $5 for both men and women after 10 O’clock. Before 10PM it was free entry tonight. Not sure if this was a short promotion or a permanent entry fee thing. Regardless, as I have mentioned in another post, $5 is ridiculously cheap compared to $20/$25 in Sydney, but the locals still don’t like it, as every single other bar/pub/club in the area country is free entry. The club is still also haunted by the scandal of $22 entry fees for guys and free entry for girls when it first opened.
Guestlist: Unsure, but very unlikely as entry is only $5. You can try club22club@gmail.com and ask if they have bookings, but what would be the point.

Cloak Room: None
Bar: $5 Gin and Tonics

A JamesTran.net clubbing blog follower recognises me!
I declared in a previous post that I wasn’t going to wear my pirate outfit anymore when going out. Well tonight I was wearing it. A friend borrowed my outfit and had returned it to me, just before I stepped into the club.  So I thought, why not, let’s wear it again!

anyway someone stops me and says “You’re JAMES TRAN aren’t you!!”. Why, yes, I am. I don’t know who he is but he introduces himself as someone from Melbourne who emailed me for advice on Sydney clubs on Australia Day. Oh now I remember!

“James I thought you weren’t wearing the pirate outfit anymore!” he adds. I am totally busted – MY OWN READERS throwing back statements I made right back into my face! -____- arrrrrr…. I mentioned I would explain it all in the upcoming review. He is also planning to visit Pumphouse tomorrow night. I pretty much yelled at him not to go,  but he goes anyway! lol is my advice not even worth listening to? I know you’re reading this right now dude, and I really hope you learned your lesson!! That lesson being Pumphouse isn’t the best venue at all for a Saturday night RnB fix.

Being what I do best

C invited me to come out tonight – I enjoyed the last event these promoters held, so let’s check it out – here we go!

U n’ I End of Semester Beach Party @ Docks Hotel

Assessment Time: 10pm to 1am
Website: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=165867712492
Address: Shop 225 Harbourside Shopping Centre
Dress Code: Beach attire, but no thongs. Casual ok otherwise
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: Free if you went in before 9pm. $20 Pre-paid tickets, $25 at the door. Something like that.
Inside: See video below. Basically podiums, a mini catwalk on the dancefloor area. One long bar to serve patrons. One DJ booth today. I am suspecting they did not sell enough tickets to afford a second house DJ.
Cloak Room: Yes, but at exuberant prices. $5 for small items, $10 for big bag (most large handbags). You’re better off dumping it underneath the podiums
DJ: Just one RnB DJ tonight.
Music: Primarily RnB, some electro mashup as is the norm these days. Nothing special, no stuff ups, and good mixing.
Crowd: Dominantly asian.
Entertainment: Inflatable animals, trees to add to the fun. Also, podium girl dancers. Hot. To top it off, a catwalk show where girls walk down and throw off their t-shirts! This was an epic entertainment show.
Atmosphere: It never got packed, but it wasn’t dead either. If you were on your own you would probably not have liked it. It was pretty sad if comparing it to the success of the Pajama party a few months earlier.

A friend’s birthday. She’s chosen Bamboo as the place to be.
Bamboo @ Martin Place Bar
(Assessment time: 1:30am-4:00am)
Website: http://www.urbanagent.com.au
Cover Charge/Entry Fee: $25 After midnight.
Music: RNB. Pretty good. Typical RNB you would hear at any good RNB club
Crowd: Asian
Atmosphere: Crowded. People dancing, just enough to reach close to capacity.
Timeline
No line:
It was 1:30 as we arrived and there was no line. I was expecting a line, but it wasn’t at full capacity. As we entered, it was probably at around 80-90% capacity. Still pretty busy. Jason the Korean bum dancer was pretty much on one of the podiums already doing his thing.

Birthday girl is already spewing her guts out
I took a photo with the birthday girl sitting down. After the photo, she sits up and empties out the contents of her stomach onto the floor. Absolutely disgustingly hilarious stuff. Apparently her 4th chunder that night.

A friend invited me to crash a farewell. She told me to dress up. So I dressed up as a pirate. Everybody else dressed up normally. It wasn’t a dress up party, it was a party where everybody dresses nice. Oh well.

I really don’t like coming here, but the girl had never been to bamboo (she’s 18) and wanted to check it out. I can’t blame her for trying at least once. I had nothing else on so I thought I’d give the event another chance. Here we go..

Bamboo @ Martin Place Bar:

Cover Chage/Entry Fee: (on guestlist) free before 10.30, discounted entry up until midnight. If not on guestlist its $25

Crowd: Asian, mostly teenagers/early 20s crowd.
Dress Code
: Casual/Smart Casual allowed. My pirate bandana was allowed. Hats not allowed if you try to walk past the cashier, but people wore them in the club anyway.
Music
: RNB. DJs were pretty good at mixing up. MC included.
Opening Times
: 10.15pm-4am
Entertainment
: Male stripper.
Atmosphere
: Around 11.30-midnight as the place got busier, with the dance floor pretty much getting packed to the rafters inside. It was pretty much a party atmosphere inside.

Timeline

We lined up and got in before 10.30. Basically they opened the doors at 10.15. You would have to be in the first 20 or so patrons to get the free entry. Thats 20 x $25 = $900. No wonder they open up so late.
