Sugar Mill Bar – 12th June 2009
Out with backpacker friends. We were in the cross this time, and the hunt was on for a place with free entry.. I had no idea of any free entry places, and we stumbled along The Sugar Mill..

The Sugar Mill
Address: 33-37 Darlinghurst Road, Kings Cross (beneath Kit and Kaboodle)
Website: www.sugarmill.com.au
Closing time: 4am
Inside: A medium sized bar with a small dance floor area to hold about 20 people. DJ included. Retro wallpapers and old school furnishings.
Drinks: After midnight, $4.50 schooners. Very fairly priced.
Crowd: Mostly older, 20s crowd
Music: Mix of pop, house, rnb. No complaints – the DJ kept the crowd going.
Cover Charge/Entry Fee: Free entry all night.
Dress Code: As per a normal bar. Casual, and hats allowed.
Atmosphere: We got in around 11.30, and it was pretty dead on the small floor. Just two girls dancing. Everyone was drinking. Our little group found a place near the front nearby and started to drink. About midnight, it started to pick up more, and people were all in a dancing mood now!

Timeline:
Friend takes over the floor
One of my friends is great. He just gets on the floor, and dances in this funny way – where he horizontally moves his body forward and back. That and his bald head is a swooner for the girls. I am so jealous, but it works for him. He’s owning the floor and the bar, and just mixing it up with everyone. He even gets the drunk guys to cheer him on! It’s great.

Gay guy hits on me. Then tells me he isn’t gay.
Its about 3am and we’ve been dancing for a while. Theres less than 10 people left, and 3 of us on the floor, and 2 indian guys. One is staring at me dance with a big smile, and the other is even bigger, and has a bigger smile. He comes up and tell me that I dance ‘so awesome!’. He’s from London. He places his hand on my chest as he says this. His other hand grabs my hand and he caresses it. i am scared.

He shows me some Indian dance moves. He takes my hand and puts his other on my chest again. We do a squat, and then we JUMP UP AND DOWN IN A CIRCLE HOLDING HANDS. This is true romanticism. I can’t let go of his hand – its part of the bollywood move. I see a couple in the corner of my eye having a giggle at our bizarre looking dance. Believe me though, its pretty popular in India, this circular-merry-go-round-holding-hands move.

We stand up. He hugs me. He asks if one of my friends is my ‘man’. I say ‘YES, hes my man’, hoping to really tell him know that ‘I’m not single and please do not hit on me, i only date one man at a time exclusively’. He ignores this and keeps up the hand caressing. Yes, I should have told him right away I wasn’t gay, but obviously I was stupid enough not to.

I sit down, and he comes up and grabs my hand again, wanting to pull me to the floor. Usually I would go up, but I really didnt want to dance with him, even though secretly I really wanted to rip up the floor again. He pulls my hands once again. No way I wanted to join in:
“oh, IM NOT GAY if you’re wondering!” he says. That alleviated things, well not really.

My friend, B, whispers in my ear :
“If you want that guy bashed up, I will kick him for you. No problem.”

That’s the last thing I wanted –  Big Indian guy fighting a French guy over an Asian guy at an Aussie Bar.

Coda: Gay guy really really wants me to dance
He said
“LOOK AT HIM!”. He points to the other Indian guy. He’s dancing in his own way.

“..DON’T YOU DARE LET HIM DANCE BETTER THAN YOU. GO OUT THERE AND DANCE BETTER THAN HIM!”
me: “nooo”
The place closes and we leave. He meets us outside and asks why I didn’t dance:

me: “I already know I can dance better than him. I know i’m king!”
him: “You can’t be king without the crown! I’m so disappointed in you”
That got me laughing. Maybe this guy had a fetish for dancing men. He said he was going to find another place to keep dancing. It was 4am.

I had just met the intenesly crazy gay British Indian version of me.
