Prelude: We just survived a crazy set from DJ Shogun at Manning Bar. We met Shogun afterwards and asked what he was doing after? It was already 1:30AM. “I’m going to the Shanghai Nights thingy to party! Come and party with me!” Oh my god. Shogun wants us to come with him. Anything you say Mr Shogun. Time to go!

Shanghai Nights @ Space Nightclub

The name Shanghai Nights has been resurrected as a replacement for the Cubic event. It’s the same promoters, but the obvious target audience now are Chinese expats, rather than Cubic trying to attract both the locals and expats. Memories of Shanghai Nights at the previous venue conjour up images of busy crowds, cigarette smoke and asians everywhere. Probably not going to be the same here tonight but it’s always good to find out!

This review includes tonight and two revisit summaries (14th Dec 2012, 28th Dec 2012) at the end.

Just here with some friends for a dance – let’s check it out. Here we go!

Lights!

Cubic (Fridays) @ Space Nightclub (Sydney)

Background: The promoters previously closed two of their Friday events, I guess in order to combine the two crowds for tonight’s event . The name Cubic is most likely based on Club Cubic in Macau.

Essentials:
Opening Hours:
Fridays 22:30 – 04:00AM

Address:
127 Liverpool st – enter via the second line to get your name marked off guestlist etc. Otherwise you may enter via the normal Shark Hotel line and walk in. After entering the Shark hotel floor, you may proceed to level 2 where Space Nightclub is. (The lift is preferably no longer in use by promoters)

Venue Website: http://www.spacevenue.com.au

Event Website: http://www.fb.com/cubicsydney

Promoters: UrbanAgent, Infinity Productionz

Occurrence:
Tonight is the second week of opening, while the plan is to have this event on every Friday.

There was no specific dress code requested by promoters – as a result casual was the minimum required to get in. T-shirts were ok and so were sneakers. Most guys though wore collared shirts with jeans / fancy shoes. Girls generally looked good as well with their going out dresses or whatever they are called.

Entry Fee / Cover Charge:
$25 for entry. $20 for guestlist entry for guys. Tonight was “ladies night” and all girls who “liked” the Facebook page got free entry before Midnight and discounted entry after midnight. In order to qualify for discounted / guestlist priced entry you were required to line outside to mark your name off and obtain the “VIP card”

Passouts:
No passouts before midnight.

Prologue
Sadly, all my friends who I know are out, are going to Space Nightclub tonight for the SocialRice white party tonight, as it is touted as the ‘only’ Asian RnB clubbing event tonight. I couldn’t prove them wrong, but oh, why did the clubbing gods choose Space? Who knows. Well its a dress up party, and I like putting on a costume. I’m honestly too tired to bring out Gandalf / Jesus, so I’ll just wear some white clothes and a white wig, then dance my merry heart tonight away! Here we go!

white-party_space-nightclub-space-superclub-sydney-wig-2

With a random clubber also wearing white!!

NYD 2011 White Party @ Space Nightclub / Space Superclub Sydney
I think Space “Superclub” is just a moniker the promoters have coined for the venue. You don’t see the larger Home Nightclub or Tank Nightclubs labelling themselves a “Superclub”. It kind of makes me sick whenever I see the word ‘superclub’ used, but that’s me.  I am going to start using the word Super for the next few weeks in my conversations, and see if it makes my friends excited for no reason.

Assessment Time: 11:00PMish – 03:15AM
Opening Hours: 10:00PM – 04:00AM
Lockout: No lockout
Address: Level 2, 179 Liverpool St Sydney
Venue Website: http://www.spacevenue.com.au
Promoter Website: Organised and promoted by http://www.evolveentertainment.com.au ; Also promoted by http://www.socialrice.com.au
Occurrence: One off event.
Outside Line: Probably 30-40 people in front of me. Lining up was probably 15-20 minutes.
Dress Code / Door Policy: White is encouraged. So much so even singlets and shorts are allowed tonight. As a result it’s a very casual white affair. Of course, there were a substantial number of people who either didn’t dress up in theme or didn’t know about it, or possessed no white clothing whatsoever in their wardrobe.
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: I paid $25 full entry. It didn’t help knowing one of the head promoters – even James has gotta pay sometimes.
Guestlist: See websites for details.
Inside: Typical nights have both rooms open. Tonight though, only the main room is open. The secondary room, which you walk upstairs into, has chairs and lounges dotted along the dancefloor to prevent any form of dancing here. Bar in the middle to serve both sides of the divider wall separating the rooms. You can only use this room as thoroughfare or a place to chat. Walk into the other side of the divider wall to enter the main room. Tonight, the curtain has been used. The curtain, being about 3/4th’s of the way back, is stretched across to give the room a smaller cosier feel and to put the people closer. On the other side of the wall there is nobody at all. On the dancefloor itself there is now room left for about 200-300 people, still quite some space compared to other venues. Lounges dot the sides of the walls and the inside of the back curtain.
Cloak Room: I can’t exactly remember, but I’m pretty sure it was $5 per item
Bar Prices / Line: I didn’t drink tonight. I already had enough drinks the past few days. The line looked about 2 orders deep. Water is free on the side.
DJs: Edo, Mike Hyper, D-Kutz, Kai Ming
Music Style: Dominantly RnB, with some house mashup. I think the DJ’s did good tonight keeping the crowd along, but I wasn’t paying too much attention tonight to the music.
Crowd & Ratio: Asians galore. Pretty much everyone here was Asian. It was an even mix of Asian Australian and Asian International Students. Crowd age was 20’s and early 30’s. Hell, even my 20 year old brother came here tonight with his friends, albeit at 2:30AM. I think he purposely avoids trying to go to the same nightclubs as me but tonight he had no choice.
Entertainment: MC Victorious. “Snow Machine” is promoted as being deployed. It’s not really snow, more soapy blobs of things that disappear/evaporate. The same ones they used at Festival First Night at Hyde Park. UV lights as well to show off your white attire in the dark. There are also three rectangular podiums. One on each side and one in front of the stage.
Atmosphere: Within the room itself, as it was pretty much shrunk in size, felt pretty busy throughout the night. Close to the front there were times earlier where it was dead, but at around midnight-peak time there were plenty of people. Some people were friendly, and some kept to themselves.

After multiple times coming here after 3AM, it was time to give this place a fair go. Guestlist sorted out, so here we go!

(All images / video removed by request of the promoter Phat Entertainment)

Zaia @ Space Nightclub
Assessment Time: 10:30PM – 04:00AM
Opening Hours: No idea on when doors actually open. Possibly 09:45PM – 04:00AM
Lockout: None
Address: Level 3, 127 Liverpool St, Sydney
Venue Website: http://www.spacevenue.com.au
Promoter Website: http://www.phatentertainment.com.au
Occurence: Every Friday.
Dress Code / Door Policy: Casual allowed. Hats allowed. My sneakers were allowed in. Basically anything goes here. Guys were a mix of casual and collared shirts/dress shoes. Girls were mostly in dresses.
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: (On guestlist) – Free before 10PM, $20 between 10PM – 11:15PM, $25 afterwards. If you ain’t on the guestlist, it’s a $25 flat charge. There is no separate guestlist line.
Guestlist / Birthday Package: Sent mine through musesydney@yahoo.com.au, the 3rd party promoters for Zaia. Reserved area was sorted out for M’s birthday, but no birthday free passes were given to us as promised, despite protests at the register. Package included bottle of champagne, which was given in the form of drink passes. However no cloak room pass was given, nor VIP table service. Admittedly there were 20-30 birthdays tonight, and I did not specifically ask for free entry, cloak room pass or VIP table service, but I did ask for the birthday party package which, I was told, would include these things. A birthday boy or girl DOES NOT have to go through the motions to ask for these birthday things.
Inside: Please note Space has been renovated since early 2010. Walk up the stairs to the Shark Hotel level, where red carpet and cash register awaits your money. No longer are the elevators used to enter the venue. Walk up another flight of stairs to enter Space Nightclub into the Trance room. The wooden dancefloor has been largened to accommodate more people. A stereoscopic light has been installed which dishes out some funky light patterns. Dancefloor holds about 40 people capacity. Bar servicing this room on the right, and an internal smoking room at the rear to hold about 20 people, like you see at some airports. Enter the bigger room via either of the two doors to be presented with a large dancefloor for about 300-400 people. Tonight, the cage podiums have been rid of! Instead, a catwalk like setup has been created, right into the middle front of the dancefloor, for the bikini contest later on. Two single podiums reside next to each of the columns holding the ceiling up.
Cloak Room: $10 Large Items, $5 small items. $3 Recheck. Ridiculous pricing as usual from this promoter.
Bar Prices: $8.50 for a Vodka Cranberry. There are two bars tonight, and the shorter lines were always on the Trance Room side. People at the RnB side waited about 20 minutes for a drink, while in the Trance Room I waited about 5-10 minutes.
Music Style: Primarily RnB in the large room, with some hip hop later in the night and some house mashups thrown in the mix as well. Repeats of songs were experienced – Mixing was done well though
Crowd: Primarily local Asians. A handful of white people, but I would say no more than 10 or 20 in total.
Entertainment: Bikini Party – Competition for a $5000 first prize. More details later. Also podiums to which only girls were allowed to dance on in the earlier part of the night.
Atmosphere: RnB: It wasn’t too busy at 11, but at around 11:30 it pretty much picked up and peaked until around 2AM – 2:30AM when the bikini contest concluded. Dancefloor was pretty busy throughout – you had room to dance around, and only about half the time you had to move around to let other people through. In the Trance Room, the trance music really only came on at around 11:30PM, and you always had enough room to bounce around and spin and do stuff, but it always managed to stay busy enough to not look too dead. In general the crowd vibe was friendly. The rest of the non dancers just stood around the edges of the dancefloor or lounges.
Trance: Dark throughout the night, smoke machines, and flashy nights with loud noise. People are more reserved here as we are all about dancing. Pretty warm and stuffy in here as well as the night wore on.

Video: Walk-through – Trance room , RnB room, smoking room, back into the trance room.

Easter Sunday @ Space Nightclub

On April 11, 2009, in RnB, Space (Sydney), Trance, by J T

Leadup: Walking around finding a club
We had NO IDEA where to go. We went to Cargo – it was $20 to get in. Bungalow 8 – there was a SHE event. It looked pretty good from outside, but it wasn’t dancey enough for us. We were looking for a good place to get in, preferably without paying. We even went to Shark Hotel – there was no DJ tonight! We walked to St. James. The organiser was outside, redirecting everyone to Space. He admitted that there weren’t enough people so they moved them all to space. Space?? *Cringe!*! We went to Nevermind Nightclub. (By now we had walked around for about an hour) and I was keen to get in. Bouncer said it was $15 with about 50 people inside. There was even RNB music! Ok, we went upstairs towards the entry booth. Some girls were leaving, and we asked if it was good inside. They said “its not good, but its not bad either”. “So its shit then” we reply, “yeah, its shit”. The guy at the counter said it was $25 to get in. It was 10.30 pm and he wants to add extra!! $15  entry only applied between 9-10pm. Considering there were about 60 people inside, we left, and went to Space.

Easter Sunday @ Space Nightclub
Address: 127 Liverpool St, Sydney
Entry Free / Cover Charge: $20
Dress Code: Casual. Hats allowed

300 people in the club! Bouncer’s honour..
The bouncer at Space told me “Theres 300 people inside the club. Are you sure you want to go in?”.
“I guess so” I say

“You guess so? Theres 300 people inside the club! It’s packed!!” Did he not us to go in?
I ask my friends “So, do you guys want to go in?”
“We walked for an hour, lets just go in”
Bouncer to my friends “are you sure? theres 300 people inside!!”
The bouncer even kindly pointed out that his hand counter had clicked 500 people entering. The exit bouncer had 200 clicks, which made for 300 people inside. He was messing with us the whole time! grr..

I really wonder why we even bothered arguing with the bouncer and his counter. We went inside and paid the $20…
