Look who chose this website for their assignment!

Victorian university student Jen Sato has taken some of my reviews from various places, cut it up and reformatted it in a nice magazine form! 🙂 It looks quite cool and I’m kind of chuffed to say the least – I am still kind of cool amongst university students.

Clubbing with James Tran – in a nice magazine format [PDF ~ 1.5MB]

It was created as for one of her 3rd year university subjects in design.

Prologue

Tonight was a birthday. The venue – Se7en. Se7en I heard was good on Fridays for Asian RNB for Melbourne, but what about Saturday? Saturday is House. That’s fine, I like house.
“Are you on the guestlist?”. A bad sign already.
Well what do you know, the birthday girl HAS organised a guestlist. The ratio of girls to guys is 2:1. However theres about 20 of us. Oh boy and let me tell you, we looked pretty sexy.
“I’m sorry, there is no guestlist under that name”
Oh wow – $10 for anyone who can guess why we were turned away. Oh, here’s a CLUE. Look what happened to them. They’ve moved onto a new event already! Some Melbourne house clubs are just as dodgy as Sydneys.
Ok, so now that was out of the way, there was only one venue left to try that I had a such a lovely time last time – Lavish @ Watermark Bar .. So here we go!
Lavish @ Watermark Bar (Melbourne)
Assessment Time: 11:00pm – 2:30am (closing time)
Address: 8/800 Bourke St, Docklands, Melbourne
Dress Code / Door Policy: Smart Casual, but its safer to err on the Smart side. Large groups of guys are likely to be rejected here. Luckily we were with a posse of girls.
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: $20, $15 on guestlist.
Guestlist: See facebook page for details. A friend knew one of the promoters and she managed to get us in.
Inside: Tonight as you walk in it is still the same setup. Main small room to hold 100 or so people. It’s a tight squeeze with the bar on the right side. DJ at the back. Tonight the back area behind the DJ was closed off. Upstairs there was another two rooms, one pretty loungy to sit 30 or so and the top level was just a lounge with a bar – with lots of people – presumably for a birthday. Good views to match.
Back downstairs there is a second external room with a second DJ. The room is also a smaller tight of a squeeze than the main room to hold 100 or less. Bar is also in here. Just outside is a smoking area of equivalent size. Phew.
Cloak Room: Yes, there is a cloak room
Bar: 3 bars. Prices unknown
Music: RnB in the main room. Modern contemporary RnB you hear on the radio. It’s good and people dance to it. In the other room is commercial/electro house. I liked it here as well but my asian friends are always in the RnB area.
Crowd: Asian to the max.
Entertainment: No extras to entertain us tonight. No MC as far as I can remember.
Atmosphere: When we came in it was good, but not packed or too busy – after an hour or so it did pick up and eventually the place became booby trapped with asians. Became very packed. I would imagine the line outside being busy still.

It’s a weekend in Melbourne – tonight I was not planning to hit any clubs, but unfortunately friends felt like celebrating the new year again…. OH LOOK ITS A CLUB ABOVE THE CASINO! I’ve been before and didn’t really enjoy it (I was alone), but friends wanted a dance fix… we were literally just at Sensation the night before! Well, here we go!
Fusion @ Crown Casino Complex Melbourne
Assessment Time: 1:00am – 3:30am
Website: http://www.crowncasino.com
Address: 8 Whiteman St, Level 3 or 4.. somewhere at the top.
Dress Code / Door policy: Casual clothing ok. No large groups of guys. Saw a group of 5 guys get the ‘Guestlist’ excuse. I step up on my own and I am allowed right in with no guestlist question. Unlucky.
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: $20 for access to fusion and the other club. $15 if you just wanted to stay in Fusion.
Guestlist: None, but check website in case.
Inside: Inside fusion is a main room to hold 200 or 300 people. Podium at front. Lounges at the back. Upstairs in the corner is a smaller room to hold 100 or so people which plays different music.
In the other room, it was one room, with two bars, a total capacity I reckon of 300 or 400.
Cloak Room: none that I could fine.
Bar: Did not utilise bar
Music: Current Contemporary Commercial House in the main room, RNB in the upstairs. I wasn’t sure if it was because I was tired from the night before, but I wasn’t into the RNB tonight, but the house tunes I got into. Friends want to stay in the RNB room though here.
In the other club.. it was just one room – a mix of rnb / pop and house. Lots of party tunes.
Crowd: Mixed. Main room there were more euros. Upstairs more asians and indians.
Entertainment: No extra entertainment for the crowd tonight while I was here
Atmosphere: Pretty packed throughout the entire night. Very solid, very good. However it got pretty smelly upstairs.
In the other room it was average.. but got worse and worse as the night got on. Many sausages, with just enough girls to keep you in, but meh.

Sensation White Melbourne 2009

Sensation White Melbourne 2009

Sensation @ Etihad Stadium Melbourne: 31st December 2009
Assessment Time
: 10pm – 5am
Website: http://www.sensation.com
Address: Etihad Stadium, Melbourne
Dress Code: You have to wear white, pants, top, skirt, everything.
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: $149 (from memory)
Inside: This years theme is the Ocean of White.

One central area where the DJ spins around. The theme of tonight was the Ocean – Two platforms extend out to either side of the stadium, to hold where ten or so water geysers are installed. Huge octopus hang from above. There is also a trance room and a VIP dance room.

Never got into the trance room. The line was massively long and the room was PACKED and probably hot and smelly – just as I like it. Sadly never got to check it out, it really looked good.

VIP room was pretty clean in comparison as there was not as many people as the trance room, but was pretty good, because here you would have enough room to dance around in! It was pretty loungey here.
Cloak Room: None
Bar: $10 cans of Smirnoff blacks
DJs: Caz James, Roger Sanchez, Sebastian Ingrosslo in the main stage. There
Music: House in the main arena, and trance, funky house in the other rooms. Compared to last year, the music tonight was much better and ‘tolerable’ I suppose. Megamix was awesome and did not disappoint and well basically it was pretty pretty good.
Crowd: People of all types were here.
Entertainment: The whole setup was a show – dancers on the water, fireworks, laser lights, bouncing balls.. it was pretty decent
Atmosphere: Very white. We had room to dance. The event didn’t sell out but it didn’t get squashy packed, regardless it was still a crapload of people here tonight. The atmosphere is buzzing before and  during the opening, then we dance. Buzz goes up again around new years midnight, then slowly dissipates as people head home, leaving the hardcores behind until the end.

Final night in Melbourne this weekend – It was off to Lavish! Here we go!

Lavish @ Watermark Bar
Assessment Time
: 11:30pm – 3:30am (closing time)
Address: 8/800 Bourke St, Docklands, Melbourne ,Victoria.
Website: http://www.facebook.com/LavishSaturdays
Dress Code: Seemingly smart casual. Most folk here were wearing collared shirts. Didn’t see any daggy dressers tonight. I was wearing a black fedora hat, white collared shirt, blazer, black pants, shoes, and suspenders.
Cover Charge / Entry Fee: $25 full charge. $20 on guestlist before 11.30pm.
Guestlist: Called one of the promoters from the Facebook webpage. She confirmed guestlist and gave me free entry as well as a bottle of champers. I forgot to redeem my free entry when I got into the club. D’oh! But I did get my free bottle of champagne. Woot!
Inside Watermark Bar: A dancefloor about the same dimensions at Martin Place Bar / Bamboo. A podium right in the middle with poles. A lengthy bar on the side. Very Bamboo-Like. However, behind the DJ is a lounge VIP area to hold 2 small parties. There is also a second room upstairs as a lounge, and a further 3rd level where there is another bar and lounges. Nice view of the waters – very nice. Walk out the side, across the pathway and there is a smoking area, as well as a second enclosed room. Inside the second room is a bar, small-ish dancefloor and Dj area. 6 or 7 lounges dot the side walls. It’s actually quite a big place.
Music: Main room was contemporary RNB throughout the whole night. Normal RNB tunes, and mixing done well. The latest commercial house in the secondary room. No complaints from me.
Crowd: Dominantly asian, young, dressed well.
Atmosphere: Crowded in the main room. Just the right amount of people in the house room, but the RNB room seemed more lively. The house room was much darker but still fun nonetheless.

In Melbourne for the weekend, and we check out Chasers Nightclub.. so here we go!

Assessment Time: 11:45pm-2:45am
Address: 386 Chapel St, South Yarra, Melbourne
Website: http://www.chasersnightclub.com.au
Dress Code: Casual. I was wearing a fedora hat, blazer, jeans and leather shoes.
Cover charge / Entry Fee: Free before 11pm if on guestlist. $20 if on guestlist after 11pm. If none of the above, it is $25.
Guestlist: See website to submit a guestlist using their form. Open guestlists ok as well. The line outside is short.
Inside: You walk in and there is a bar to your immediate left in an enclosed VIP area on busy nights. On the right is the general bar. Further up is the main dance area. The DJ booth is on an elevated platform, and smack right in the middle is a massive square podium to hold a good 10 or so people, elevated to the same level as the DJ. Fancy green lights and disco lights as well as smoke machines everywhere. This place was built for trance. There was also a second balcony level but alas was closed for tonight.
Smoking Area: There is a little side room near the toilets, which looks like a male urinal from a third world country. You stand in line staring at a wall as you smoke your cigarette. Looked pretty funny. I suppose its better for the clubs to keep them inside, rather than going outside and losing their patrons.
Music: RNB. Typical RNB beats mixed well.
Crowd: Dominantly Asian, young.

Atmosphere: Not too many people, but not dead, just in the middle to keep the club going.
