Life at uni can get lonely without friends. So what a better way to make friends than to go on a booze cruise! This was the first one lined up that I could find.. so here we go!

She kinda looks like me

Intersociety “Dragonboat” Cruise (on that small boat)
Assessment Time: 07:30PM – 10:30PM
Cruise Hours: 07:30PM – 10:30PM
Route: Leaving Darling Harbour, around to Port Jackson for a few circles, and then heading back to Darling Harbour.
Promoter Website: A once off event held by multiple Asian oriented university societies
Occurrence: Once off event.
Dress Code / Door Policy: No dress code – anything goes. A handful of people dressed up as pirates (:o!!), some girls as asian orient princesses (I can’t really describe the dress)… and whatever else there was. Most people wore their normal casual attire.
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: $35 Early bird. $45 otherwise ( I think..)
Inside: A small almost tug-like boat. Bottom level to hold around 100-200 people, which is where the dancing happens. Upstairs is where the bar is, and a smaller open area about half the size as the bottom.
Cloak Room: None
Bar Prices / Line: Standard beer, house wines, Bacardis, premixed spirit drinks were FREE all night long. The bar service is fast, so waiting is no longer than 5 to 10 minutes. Later in the night the line was barely there. Oh, there was also free food throughout the night. These uni cruises are full of win.
DJs:
Music Style: I didn’t spend much time downstairs to be honest – from the time I was downstairs, it was Contemporary RnB and Pop.. pretty typical to an RnB club.
Crowd & Ratio: Mostly Asian Australian (maybe 70%%). The rest were International Students from all over the world. Ratio wasn’t very promising. Actually.. the cruise had about 100 or so people – it unfortunately did not sell out – possible that it was run too early on the semester? Who knows.
Entertainment: No extra entertainment
Atmosphere: Initially everyone was upstairs, not dancing, but drinking. Eventually as people become more friendly with each other, and the music got louder, most people went downstairs to dance their hearts away. At the peak time of dancing (around 09:30PM) it was pretty packed you could say, and we were relegated to the edges of the dancefloor.. so in this aspect it was pretty cool. In all, the boat was about half capacity – I was hoping for a little more of a population.
Walkthrough: 9PM of dancefloor

Click here to view the embedded video.

Timeline

Which boat?
There were two cruise boats. One awesome looking boat – the Lady Rose (which I went on previously), and a smaller not so good looking boat in comparison. Both boats had youngish looking people going on board. Sadly we were relegated the smaller boat. Boohoo! Such is uni life.

It didn’t sell out
I was kind of disappointed in the turn out. As mentioned, only about half the boat I would say was filled up with people. I mean.. $35 for freaking unlimited alcohol and food. Like people typically spend $100 or whatever on drinks and cover charge, and here its only $35, with entry to the after party after. My GOD.. take the chance while you can to go on these booze cruises you uni students!! The upside was that there was no chance that the booze would run out

Leaving Darling Harbour - with free energy drink for the night ahead

Friends who didn’t turn up
Spotted – A poor lonely girl playing with the mobile. Why, when there was free alcohol to be had? She explained that her friends ditched the cruise. Seriously? You buy tickets to unlimited booze, and you ditch it at the last minute. What a waste of money. Give that money to charity or something if you can blow that much money away! We ended up talking to the lonely girl about what the odds are at winning at the casino in the long term (the answer is ZERO, unless you’re playing Texas Holdem against other people)

Arrivederci

We finished, and some people kicked on to the after party at Home Nightclub.

Recommendation
Excellent value. Sad about the turnout. Alcohol though makes worries go away.

“Dragonboat” Cruise 2011: 5.0/10

Club recommendations. The problem with recommendations is that every club has its own unique qualities that make it lovable by different people. It’s easy to hate on some particular clubs, but extremely difficult to recommend a venue for someone.

I wrote an article for the I Heart Uni Magazine, listing clubs to recommend, for their edition which comes out this week. Article was submitted a few weeks ago. Target audience was asian uni students and I was pretty much restricted to outside the CBD. Quite difficult as Asians are as rare as hen’s teeth in the cross or on oxford st.

So anyway, my recommendations were:

1. Havana for Friday and Saturday: Havana Fridays for RnB is no longer. I went to their final night and it was shit as. For Saturdays, my recommendation is still to go here, but the crowd is still Euro and the music still House and Trance if you are into that.

If to find a replacement, I would say Slide Bar on the monthly ‘Bounce‘ Korean night events are the way to go. Unfortunately, they only come once a month.

Also, The Tunnel have RnB on Fridays, but I have not been yet to ascertain a recommendation.

2. Moulin Rouge for either Friday / Saturday: I wouldnt send an RnB lover here. They all hate it. If you like house and if you like dancing, then yes check it out. It’s a great dirty atmosphere. If you don’t like to dance, then avoid this place, as it is quite loud. Crowd is Euro/Aussie

3. The Gaff on Tuesdays: The Gaff Tuesdays is one of the best all round venues I’ve been to. People, cheap drinks, friendly people, wet t-shirt comps and some dancefloor action. It’s good as a safe recommendation for people on Tuesday nights. I still hold this as a recommendations. Crowd is still backpackers.

Thoughts
Most importantly, a good night is usually when you are in an open mood to meet people, and have fun with or without alcohol.

<fb:like href='http://jamestran.net/2010/06/06/comments-on-my-i-heart-uni-article-of-club-recommendations' send='false' layout='button_count' show_faces='true' width='450' height='65' action='recommend' colorscheme='light' font='lucida+grande'></fb:like>

I’ve been asked to check this University event out. A combined effort of all the universities, targeted for students who had just had their first O-Week. Well, considering my own O-week was about 8 years ago, I was wondering whether I should go. Then.. on the promo poster were the magic words: “WHITE PARTY”. Can anybody say GANDALF DA WHITE IS BACK??!! Got my dancing partner C to come along and so off we set our dancing merry feet – here we go!

I Love Uni White Party @ Home Nightclub

Assessment Time: 11:00pm – 3:00am
Opening Hours: 9:30pm – late (4-5am?)
Website: http://www.homesydney.com.au
Address: Cockle bay wharf, Darling Harbour, Sydney
Dress Code / Door Policy: White attire only. However people who were not wearing white were still allowed in, despite warnings that people were not going to be allowed in.
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: $15 presold tickets (sold out). $25 at the door. The girl at the counter liked my outfit and I asked for a discount for having such an ‘awesome’ outfit. She lowered my entry fee to $20. Score!
Guestlist: none
Inside: The White Party event was for the main arena room to hold 500 or so people. All the other rooms were closed. Later after midnight, the other trance / house / rock band rooms were opened up for the general public.
Cloak Room: Did not utilise cloak room today.
Bar: Didn’t drink tonight
DJ: Unknown.
Music: RnB initially in the main room. After around midnight, a change of DJ’s and an opening of doors to the public for sublime ensure the RnB was killed, and house and trance/ house took over for the rest of the night. It was strange because at one point in the night, a singer came out and sang some house songs, it was so bloody bizarre – how could people dance to this?? The small room upstairs was also used for a local rock band gig. I have never seen it done like this – what has happened to Sublime?? I was disappointed in one’s choice of music selection to dance to after the rnb stopped.
Crowd: Lots of asians for the rnb component, with a sprinkle of other nationalities. Almost all are uni students. Of course, as rnb is killed, the rnb lovers left and the ratio became a mixed bag of everything – Whites, Asians, Indians.
Entertainment: MC and professional male dance crews. Wow, they actually *do* hire men to dance. They were more house dancers but were pretty good at what they did.
Atmosphere: Main room was always happening. The other rooms later in the night were only so so. The sublime room was the only other somewhat happening room for the trance lovers.

Video: – 360 view at around 2am,
Taken by C – you can see me for 2 seconds dancing with a random dude

Click here to view the embedded video.

Keep reading on for Gandalf’s adventures!

Timeline

Gandalf is back
It’s been 10 weeks since I took over Sensation White Melbourne.. and now it was time to take over Australia’s largest club. (yeah, it really is the largest one). As I line up, people in line are pretty much staring at my awesome outfit. People left right centre are taking photos of me and with me, and I still haven’t stepped into the club yet! I think the outfit is alright. I still like my pirate one better.

No usyd represent?!
This was a joint university thing. There were placards everywhere with “I <3 UNSW”, “I <3 UTS”, and “I <3 MACQ” .. but where was “I <3 USYD”??? Nowhere, my friend. I couldn’t find any placards. What a travesty!! Well, someone has to represent!

Photobooth is designed to steal your money.
Met some girls and we jumped into the photobooth for photos. It’s 8 dollars!! Jesus H. Christ what a rip off. So in goes 1 dollar, 2 dollars.. a few more.. until it says there is $1.50 left. Chuck in a dollar and it doesn’t accept it. Throw another $2 coin and it just swallows it. Oh my god.. what a crafty little machine this was… eating our money and yet not producing photos!! What a load of horseshit! Meanwhile, immature teenage boys keep peeking into the booth, praying that we are having an orgy of some sorts. Ha, one can only dream.

I have many many fans. Most of them guys.
A lot of guys come up and say things like ‘awesome outfit’, ‘can I have a photo?’, ‘JESUS!’, or anything along those lines. I like them, I take photos and usually we part. But shit, this one particular guy followed me around half the night! After we had our photo I dug into the main room and beelined to the middle. I turn around he is right behind me, following me! Fair enough, so I stop, but he stops as well. He wants to hang out and dance with Gandalf. My golly gosh. Biggest grin on his face everytime I looked back at him. He’s a fan of me, big deal. I had a suspicion he could have been gay, but I will never know.

He stalked me around the place

Getting up on main stage.
People are jumping up on stage and a random girl I met has jumped up for dance. Other people who are trying to get up are promptly taken down by security. I decide to give it a try, since I have the best outfit tonight and all. I crawl up onto the stage and stand up in front of the crowd. Everyone cheers, but within 2 seconds the security detail tell me to get off. So so unfair. Meanwhile the random girl is left ALONE up on stage to dance. She isn’t even dancing. I would call it swaying her body left and right, with the occasional booty bump to add flavour. She was obviously loving this attention. Godamn some things in life are unfair. One day I will be allowed up on stage!!

More guys follow me to take leftovers
Most places I went in the main room, guys are following me. I am noticing a trend. Girls come up to me and talk, and then these guys are swooping in left right and centre to be my wingman. I didn’t ask for this! Oh well, what are you going to do.

Girls don’t like hairy guys
I love this outfit. I walked by a few girls (and this only happens with girls) .. and you can see the look on their face as I walk by. Their entire face screws up into the ‘what the f*ck?’ look, or occaisionally a girl would turn around and see me coming – they literally YELP in shock / fright about this menacing wizard walking past. It’s quite entertaining for me. haha

Boob Squeeze War!
Yeah, a random girl squeezes my boobs without permission. I find that unfair, so I naturally grabbed and squeezed her boobs back without asking her. She REELED BACK in horror and gave me the DIRTIEST look ever. hahahahahahhahahaa.. how does it go – eye for an eye?

.. so take off all your robes
It was getting hot in here, so off went the cape and wigs. I felt like a free man. Meanwhile the wigs and cape sit near a group of 8 or so asians, who stare at me, C and her friend dance. They are literally gawking at us. I would probably have been doing the same thing back when I was 18/19, praying one day I could dance like that.

Getting pretty hot.. took off the beard

anyway they seem bored and decide to do what any normal bored person does at a club – PUT ON SOMEONE ELSE’S OUTFIT. Second thing I know, there is a guy with my wig, beard and cape on. It’s funny, but I have to keep a close eye on it – I don’t want to get this stuff stolen. They seem friendly enough and we take some happy snaps. They can’t dance though, which was a shame.

He put on my white outfit without asking - it suits him though

Here’s an extra video of a raver at the Sublime room:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Arrivederci
C and friend want to leave at 2am, primarily of the bizarre music that was now playing, but Gandalf convinces them to stay another hour, and we leave 3am.

Recommendation

First half rnb was good. Everyone is in the party mood. However only the main room was open at this time for the rnb lovers. Still was a good atmosphere.

I Love Uni @ Home Nightclub (upto midnight) – 7.5/10

Second half is where the sublime / Oh My! crowd came in.. mixed feelings – all rooms were opened up and the choice of music you want to dance to was wide open, but the crowd just wasn’t there. There were not enough people to fill all rooms up. It was busy, but not like you would expect on an old ‘Famous’ Saturday night when it was truly at capacity. If the ‘I Love Uni’ was not on earlier – I am pretty sure the place would have been pretty dead. The trance room was a sad sight – I wish more people were into it – however the people inside were friendly and just danced away.

Oh My / Sublime @ Home Nightclub Sydney – 5/10

<fb:like href='http://jamestran.net/2010/03/12/i-love-uni-white-party-home-nightclub-friday-12th-march-2010' send='false' layout='button_count' show_faces='true' width='450' height='65' action='recommend' colorscheme='light' font='lucida+grande'></fb:like>

u n' i's debut event - a pajama party at docks hotel - i dressed up as a sailor. tonight there was a pillow fight and a sham dance-off!

A friend invited me to a little uni end of semester party – with a Pajama theme – sounded great! So I dressed up as a sailor.

U n’ I Pajama Party @ Docks Hotel
Assessment Time: 10:30pm – 2.30am
Entry Fee/ Cover Charge: $25 prepaid, $30/$35 at the door. Alternatively you could have come to Docks Hotel before 9.30 for drinks without paying entry and hung around for dance later.
Occurrence: Once off. It was U n’ I’s (the organisers) first event.
Crowd: Dominantly Asian, and almost entirely of uni students.
Music: RNB, House. The typical Sydney RNB DJ’s attended tonight. Sefu.. and Ace and some other ones for the main area. In the side room/area there was also RNB, but the DJ here also mixed it up with some House music. The King of Pop died earlier today, so there was also a 4 song Michael Jackson tribute in the middle and at the end of the night, which was nice of the DJs. A bit of Jackson 5, and then some MJ songs.
Atmosphere: Pretty good. Crowded as people were let in. Most stayed until 1.30.
Entertainment: Dance off, and an all girls pillow fight. Videos of the pillow fight later

360 Video Inside:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Timeline:
Scored a ticket for $5 off from a girl in line
I’m lining up, and a tap on the shoulder. A girl is offering to sell her ticket. I buy it for $20. What luck! The promoter I was supposed to buy it off was reluctant but agreed to let me buy her ticket instead. She and her friends were cute.

I get given the finger from her dwarf friend
later on that night I bump into them and introduce myself to her friends. All are pretty nice, except the shortest girl. She must have been 140cm, shorter than my mum. I bent my knees to shake her hand on her level. Her friends laughed. She took offence and gave me the finger, not jokingly, but seriously and she refused to shake it. So I grabbed her other hand and shook it. She told me to fuck off. lol oh well.

Met a samurai in the toilet
I walked into the bathroom and there were lots of guys changing into their outfits. A samurai walks in and I compliment him. He compliments me back. We found out we have something in common – we both graduated from university already and we both look like creeps. We ended up hanging out for the rest of the entire night, photo whoring ourselves ONLY with people who dressed up in their PJs:

Photo whoring with Samurai man behind me.

Girls Pillow Fight Video!
Purely for the men to watch – there was a mattress installed in the club, and 5 girls were asked to come up and fight it off for a 50 dollar voucher or something. The only rule was that they had to be on their knees. haha, hilarious. There are two fights, so here they are:

Pillow Fight 1

The girl in the black was voted the winner by audience cheer.

Pajama Party Pillow Fight (Docks Hotel)

I think one of the DJs didn’t like me dancing
It’s around 2am, and In the side room, some awesome house music was playing, and it was just me and my friend dancing. NOBODY else was dancing here, everyone seemed buggered. I love the house music playing so I went up to the DJ and say:
me: “I LOVE House music! RNB over there (in the other room) is crap compared to this!”.
DJ: (nods his head)

The next song he played was RNB. what a slack bastard!!

Dirty floor
After the pillow fight, some pillows were destroyed and the ‘feathers’ were distributed around the floor:

Remnants of the pillow fight lay on the dancefloor

Possessive girls
Psycho girls also stole the teddy bears from the beds. I saw a big teddy sitting on a chair. I walked up to pat it and I hear these huge ‘NOOOO!! AAAAA!!!!’ shrieking devlish noise from 3 girls who had stolen the teddy bear for their own. Just because I’m an asian sailor doesn’t mean I’m going to steal it:

Friend posing with one of the teddy bears stolen

The uni vs uni dance off – SHAM!
“We’re going to have a dance off – so all you people from USYD and Macquarie come to the front of the floor now!!”

This was it. 3 years of clubbing had come to this point in time. It was time to represent. My dancing friend was also from USYD and we wanted to go up and represent!! We figured it out – We were experienced, and OK dancers, and comparitively we would be competing with Macquarie uni students who have clubbed for no longer than 1 or 2 years, if that – since they went to uni they wouldn’t have the time to focus on dance. We were guaranteed a win!

We went up to the front. We hung around, and nothing. We look out and the dance-off had already begun! WTF!! We werent’ even called. The dancers were already chosen for this dance off.

So I went up to the dance circle to see the competition I was potentially up against. You would not believe what I saw. I SAW MY FORMER DANCE INSTRUCTOR REPRESENTING MACQUARIE UNI !!! OMG . He is quite possibly one of the best hip hop dancers in australia, I think he’s choreographed for some routines on “So you can think you can dance australia” and not only that, he’s also 30 something years old, and I don’t even think he went to uni in Australia. Grrr!

I look to the other side who was representing USYD, and you would not believe what I saw. THOSE TWO GUYS I SAW PERFORM AT THE UNSW BSXC DANCE LAST MONTH!! OMG. These guys weren’t as good as my former dance instructor, but they danced in synchronization which made it look cool, but rehearsed. Instructor danced with what came out – that is true dance.

I suppose the general population were oblivious to the sham happening right in front of them. Me and my two friends, who had taken classes with the dance instructor, knew exactly what was going on. At least the crowd and myself were impressed with their moves – If we had danced, they would have definitely been disappointed! STILL THAT’S NOT THE POINT!! grrr.

Sham dance off between the 'two unis'

In the end, USYD won. My dance instructor was 100x better though, but that’s how the cookie crumbles.

Coda
Left due to pure exhaustion and the increasing ratio of men to women. It was 3am. A good night had by all.

I took a Friday off and go clubbing on a Thursday night for a uni event.

What an acronym!! The University of New South Wales Business Society ‘Be Sexy’ dance!!! Try saying that 10 times. My boss has been encouraging me to use my annual leave, so I took a Friday off and went with a friend on Thursday night!

About Home Bar

Address: 101 Cockle Bay Wharf, Darling Harbour (opposite the IMAX theatre)
Website: http://www.homesydney.com
Inside: Entry is via their side door. It is not accessible via the front bar entrance. When you enter, there is a little foyer with two openings. On the right opening is entry to the main room. The other is a set of stairs that lead up.

The main room is quite large both in terms of dimensions and height. You enter from the back where the bar resides. At the back is a technician (yes, a light and possibly sound technician) The DJ is at the front. The huge Shiny sublime logo hangs as a modern day chandelier. Overlooking the main room on 3 sides is a balcony setup where people are peering down Upstairs is another bar and the balcony peering over downstairs. On Level 2 there is a small room playing trance music. another set of stairs around the bar leads you to level 3 - set of stairs and a tiny room resides where slow house plays. It’s not crowded and it’s quite good music, but it was dead as throughout the night.

The main room of Home Nightclub. Taken from the 2nd level balcony

About BSXC
A once off event, possibly once a year for the UNSW BSOC.
Entry: $10 (1st round), $15 (2nd round), $20 (3rd round). $25 at the door. A relative bargain.
Crowd: Dominantly Asian. It was UNSW, after all.
Atmosphere: Main room – very good. Use of MC had the crowd continually going. Trance room – Small, but there was no pretentiousness when dancing here. House room upstairs – Dead most of the night, but for me, seemed to be the best room, I liked the beats, and I loved the freedom to dance, compared to downstairs were it was packed to the rafters.

Entertainment: I caught a glimpse of some dancers at the front. Don’t know if there were any other forms of entertainment. It was a good way to break things up. No podium dancers at this place, nor podiums to speak of.

Timeline
Got in around 10pm, and it was packed as in the main room. I headed straight for the cloak room. Everyone got their bags in, then it was my turn to put my bag in the cloak room- “sorry, the cloak room is full”. NO WAY!! I KNEW I should have gotten here earlier for the bar tab. I hid the bag behind a chair, where a couple was already making out.

Earplugs (a plug)
I was in front of one of the main speakers while waiting for the cloak room. It was so loud, I could literally feel my clothes and body vibrate to the really loud music. I had my earplugs in my ears to save me (later when I got home – no ringing!) – Thank god for earplugs!
They aren’t that bad, and some people do notice, but most of the time people don’t really care. Its only when you take photos and see you realise how dorky looking you look like:

Myself with an orange 32dB reducing ear plug, (and my chest hair)

Room switching
I’m an impulsive dancer – When I hear a song, I run off to the next room and dance, until I am sick of the song playing over there as well. This way, it sort of keeps me happy through the night, instead of being stuck in one room where you have no choice in what music you wish to dance to. I like these kind of venues, but sadly most only have one room of music.

Phased closing
First they closed the top level house room, then they close the trance room and everyone was pushed to the bottom rnb level, where they started to play some more commercial house than rnb. It was a bizarre mix. At least the MC was still there on the mic

Some technical difficulties
Unfortunately throughout the night, especially nearing the end, there were a few sound difficulties. Meaning that at one time the music was pumping at normal loud levels, then suddenly the volume would cut in half! It became as quiet than a lounge, and people could actually have normal conversations in the room. This kind of happened to often, and just got a little annoying.

Teenagers – everywhere
I have never seen so many sets of braces at a club, ever. I think everybody I met or talked to here was under 20. This line pretty much scaerd me:

“I just turned 18 in April!”. April was 3 weeks ago. I didn’t start proper clubbing until I was 22. A late bloomer. Everybody I met here said it was their first time here. I felt pretty old here! Oh well, it more or less made me look like an awesome dancer since they couldn’t dance.

Videos:
Twirling in the trance room:

Coda
Left at around 2am, I was exhausted. Over an an average to good night. Nothing much to complain about, which is good.

Tonight I was drinking at roof bar. It’s my de facto Thursday night watering hole. Around 8pm some people dressed up come into the place. Woolie recognizes one of them from her high school. There was a dance party tonight, from none other than the UNSW comsoc / lawsoc societies. A few weeks ago myself, Kevin and a friend snuck onto a comsoc party cruise and had a good time, how very funny that I ended up being at the spot of their next event. The host kicked all the students out, but we stayed as we were patrons of Roof Bar. So then the party started…

Event details
Entry: $5 presale, $15 on the door (event was sold out)
Music: RNB
Dress code: Dualities/Doubles. Eg doctor and nurse
Crowd: Uni students, asian.

Timeline
About 9pm people stared coming in. Woolie spoke to Pearl and Jan. I was introduced along with Ben and Brojo, and an. Nobody was dancing yet and music just started so I went down to the floor with Ben, Brojo and the girls. Soon enough the crowd warmed up and as more people filed in everyone was dancing away.

I bumped into the girls I met on the cruise a few weeks ago – Amanda, Christine, and a hello to Elizabeth. I really should meet more guys. anyway, both seemed to be off their faces!

anyway not much really happened.. Me, Brojo and Ben danced with Pearl and Jan most of the night. Most of the night we would see everyone saying hi to each other and dancing with each other.. lots of fun. It’s much different than to a club venue where nobody knows each other. I wore Jan’s angel wings which was pretty cool..

Coda
We left at 11pm so we could catch the train home, ha!

Prologue
A moment of inspiration
Me, Kevin and his friend (i forget his name) were drinking at Cargo Bar on Thursday night. We look below and see some uni students awaiting for a cruise. Kevin recognizes it as the UNSW Comsoc cruise, which he and his friend went to years ago. We watch as the party cruise ship sails in. It’s a double storey glass walled ship. The bottom level has a bar and is purely for dancing, judging by the empty wood/carpet floor. Upstairs looks like a chill out area to observe the sights. Suddenly Kevin cries, “Let’s get on that boat!”. We were all in business attire, but we were asian, so we looked young…. we were going to sneak on board.
What’s the password?
We meekly approached one of the widly dressed people, who was one of the organisers.
Kevin: We lost our tickets! They’re at home!
Wildy: Do you have your receipts?
Kevin: No, they’re at home as well
Wildy: (Getting suspicious) So tell me, how much were the tickets?
(I opened my mouth to say $40 but then Kevin butts in..)
Kevin: It was $35, right? (nodding head, serious look)
<< pause >>
Wildy: Have you seen the poster?? What did it look like?
Kevin: No, I havent seen the poster at all…
Wildy: Alright alright you can get on.. just line up

…
……

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111

We couldn’t believe it, Kevin was a guessing genius!!!! We were all giddy and full of excitement, like little kids let loose in a toy department. We got stamped and walked on board with anticipation…

Timeline onboard

Pedro the magician and James the … ?
First thing was getting rid of my luggage bag somewhere safe. There was no place to put it on the boat. I was looking around, and who do I see? Shelly’s boyfriend Pedro!! He was here to perform some illusions with 2 of his fellow illusionists. We exchanged hello’s and Wildy2 approached us and told us to follow him so we could put our bags somewhere! Perfect!!

We walked through the underdeck kitchen to a staff storage room where we put our bags. Wildy2 introduces himself to us.

Wildy2: (to pedro) “You’re the magician, right?”
Pedro: “Yup!”
Wildy2: (to me) “.. and you’re the photographer right?”
Me: “….. Ummm…”

Oh shit. This royal treatment was meant for some other guy. There was probably a photographer stuck on the dancefloor with his equipment looking like a lostie…

Me: “… not really… I’m with Pedro though!”
Wildy2: “Oh, so you’re not the photographer?”
Me: “.. no.”

I gave a sheepy smile and laugh. He didn’t look impressed at all. He did let me leave my stuff in the room as I hurried back to the dancefloor.

Atmosphere
This was a really fun atmosphere. Everybody was given glow sticks. I took two red ones and made them my hoop earrings. They gave out pizza, so we ate on all the pizza available before it cold. You only had to pay for drinks. I don’t drink when I go dancing, so I gave that a miss. The crowd was mostly asian, considering it was UNSW and a Comsoc cruise.
Finding dance partners
Did a few laps of dancing and bumped into two girls. They liked my earrings. I was jealous they had lots of sticks. We danced. It was quite easy. I wish more dance parties were like this .. instead of the pretentious girls who think every guy who pops out of nowhere is a creep. Well, I did have a small talk convo so I guess this instance doesn’t count. I basically hung out with these two the whole night. Tried to crack onto one of them but ended up handlocked with the other. It wasn’t much help that she has a boyfriend.

Kevin and his friend were having fun as well, Kevin couldn’t pickup as he had a girlfriend.

How old are you?
I made a few small talk conversations.. most of them went like this
Me: you go clubbing?
Him/her: not really, I just turned 18

I really felt freaking old.

Music
RnB and house was playing throughout… it was all good I can’t complain much at all.. the atmospheric vibe surpassed any bad hiccups that may or may have not happened.

Coda
At 11pm the cruise boat returned to shore, and we all clamoured off. I loved it.. mostly because I got to meet lots of new people… and it was free. If you ever have a chance to go to one of them and you like to dance to music in any form, go!! It’s worth the $35, haha. It was a 3 hour ride all up. A normal night of clubbing.

(After the organisers read this post, any future events will surely have a name list. On top of that I am most likely banned from any future events)

Meiny and Dania invited me for clubbing tonight. It was a university event @ Docks so young girls guaranteed. Indonesians though. Hmm, I had no idea what kind of quality they were. Oh well, I had to go !

About Glow
What: A once off Indonesian student event. Entrants get glow sticks and party with UV light.
Music: RnB and Minimalist House
Crowd: Young and Indonesian (Indo as they like to be called for short)
Cover charge: Ticketed event. $20 for members of the Indonesian society organising the event. Otherwise it’s $25.

About Docks Hotel:
Located at Darling Harbour, it’s a long stretch with two areas on each end. On one end is a dance area and a carpeted lounge. On the otherside is another loungey area. On a typical clubbing night out there, both ends will play different styles of music. Along the middle are more chairs and a bar, leaving a narrow area to walk through.

What happened:

I crown you Lord James
The line wasn’t that long so it was ok. Once I got in, they gave me these glowsticks. Where am I going to put them? It was then I realized I was wearing my striped elastic hairband. So I put the sticks in my head, and now I had a glow in the dark crown thing. Well it looked more like I had antennae sticking out of my head, looking to pick up any rogue television or alien broadcasts from the air. I think everyone I walked by thought I was some weirdo .. they definitely had a good look at my bright crown as we pass by each other.

Why there are no pictures in this post:
I met Meiny and Dania. We took photos of my lovely crown and of each other. I held onto Dania’s camera. We danced. I took more photos. Gave back the camera. A while later Dania asks for her camera. I gave it to her. No I didn’t she insisted. Yes I did. Well it wasn’t in my pocket anymore. It was gone. Fuck. As I’m writing this post up.. we had negotiated to pay 50/50 for her new camera. Expensive night out!

Meiny tries Absinthe
Asian girl meets Absinthe – we all know how this is going to end. She ran off after the shot and we couldn’t find her. Her SMS to me sums it up:

“Im in toilet.. Fukin spewin”

That’s gold. SMS and spew at the same time? Women are truly masters at multitasking.

The Music:
RNB side: I think they used the same DJ’s as the ones from bamboo, because not after long, the 2nd DJ started repeating the same songs as the 1st one played ! They also had the same MC who usually attends Space and Bamboo.. I don’t know his name. The music was better with the last DJ who played lots of west coast rap. As usual though, the main RNB was the typical shit.

That Akon song ‘I wanna fuck you:’
Meiny has a boyfriend, who isn’t here tonight. I’m dancing with Meiny when this particular song comes up. Oh no. Yes that song. Now really – It was totally awkward because usually you sing along to the songs that are being played. It didnt seem right to sing a song about performing coitus with your mate’s girlfriend. We just stopped dancing. Finally left to the house area after the first few “I wanna fuck you.. ya already know — I wanna fuuuuuckk youuuuu” chants.

My final thought about this song – “Hey dj.. PLEASE Mr DJ… tell me if you can you hear me… turn that fucking music off”

House side:
I’ve escaped to the house side. It’s apparently an Indonesian DJ playing his house. I was hoping for some good commercial house or some thumping beats. But gawd. There was no electro beats.. it was real old school house.. and a bunch of guys were ecstatically dancing to it. Nuts, so I joined in. There was a guy with a fake set of tits running around. It was a good feel.

Otherwise the house music was forgettable.

Fights of the night

1. This was on the way home, we saw a scuffle between two groups of indonesian guys

Guy 1: Don’t fight over a f*cking woman !
Guy 2: I’m not! I’m fighting to defend my friend !

Yeah. Right.

Coda
I’m ending this post early because I’ve got a huge backlog to do. Finished. Went home. I don’t recommend docks unless you like rnb. The both times I’ve been there, there were fights. Crazy.
