Dress Code / Door Policy: There is no dress code. Most people are dressed casually – t-shirts, no t-shirts, collared shirts, etc.

Guestlist: No guestlist.
Inside: Walk into to a two tiered room. Bottom tier the bar area with some stools and tables, and a pool table. Podium for two as well. Top Tier is the dancefloor, DJ area, large podiums for about 5 people and 10 people respectively, on both sides of the floor. Dancefloor holds about 20-30 people.
Cloak Room: No cloak room services.
Bar Prices: Didn’t drink tonight
DJs: Unknown
Music Style: Commercial House mixed with Top 40 and classic house / trance songs. The undertone of the whole night was trance and house.
Crowd: Backpackers from all over the place. Mostly they look European. There was about a ratio of 30/70 Girls to Guys.
Entertainment: MC’s mingle and dance with the crowd.
Atmosphere: Average. Tonight is a beach theme. The backpackers are dancing like hooligans. There’s a guy dancing on a speaker, there are red plastic cups strewn along the floor, there was a guy passed out on the sofa. There are beach balls being kicked around but at this point in time they have accumulated lots of brown crap, and they look like filth balls instead of beach balls. Its quite dirty when you think about it. People are wearing hats that were given away, and leis. If you embrace the backpacker vibe it was kind of ok. However there just weren’t enough people here at 2AM – if there were more, the atmosphere would be killer. I am sure earlier in the night there were more people.

Continue in the bathroom urinal – There is only one cubicle and so when people come here to throw up, there are no real other places to throw up other than the sink (clogged up) or the urinal. Freaking filthy. The urinal was flooded to the top, so when you stand up onto the rails above the urinal, you pray to whatever god is out there that the waters dont sway, lest the mixture of vomit, urine and water splashes onto your shoes, for the base of your shoes are certainly infected.

Dancing Fun
MC’s joined us in dancing. We danced. Sang along to the tunes. I liked the songs here. The floor was sticky in some areas thanks to the filth. It was doable. I don’t know what else to write here.

This is as backpacker as it gets in the city

This is probably more backpackery than Side Bar. There are a lot less people here, but the security here are more relaxed here. People are allowed to sleep on sofas and dance wherever they choose. When it came to closing time, they didn’t kick the people out, they asked us nicely, and waited for us to leave. Amazing.

Recommendation
If you want a backpacker place to go for free, well, check this place out. It’s special in its own way, but I wouldn’t recommend a normal local to check it out.

Music: RnB and House.  Pretty good tunes to dance to, no complaints!

Straight cross dressers:
These guys were wearing one pieces, and they were all straight. Was it because there was free champagne for ladies? Either way they got lots of attention. Found out that they actually come here every week!:

Random girl joins us
Random girl with a mole joins our group. I nab her and dance with her. It gets hot. It gets steamy. Then her friends arrive and its all over. She goes outside. i want to talk to her but she’s on the mobile. Sigh.

Pretty dead floor
Most of the time we were there, nobody was dancing. The crossdressing guys were picking up girls at the bar, and only our little group would be dancing most of the time. Later on a couple came up and some other girls, but that was it. Mind you it was Thursday, so don’t expect much activity at any club.

Coda: I leave to go home

I was only here for about 2 hours before I had to leave at 11.20 to go home. The atmosphere was alright as we were with friends. I saw some loners not doing much, they looked bored.

It’s an ok place to go for a city club on Thursday.

Well, we were already here, after a long walk from Mardi Gras. We went inside..

The place to celebrate your bucks night
Walked right in and bumped into Pete (not real name),  the ex-boyfriend of a girl I am friends with. We get along well. A high school friend we lost touch with decided to have his Bachelor’s party at Scary Canary. They already had strippers in the hotel room and decided to come here to finish the night. Sadly a bad choice. Congratulated the groom to be, and we had some drinks. Pete was all about drinking and wanting to picking up girls with me, even though he had a girlfriend. “you know what I mean, its been two years.. “.

Atmosphere.. not so good.
I called a friend, and she said she was at Pavillion, and that it was rocking. That is saying something. The place was probably at 30-40% capacity when we entered. I’ve never actually been here on a night when it’s been good. Well then again, I’ve only been here on RnB nights. Not much improved. Had some random guys take photos with me and my Pippi Longstockings Mardi Gras hair. Below is a pic with a drunken long time friend of mine, and his cousin.

Bumped into more friends
I bumped into a girl I met 2 years ago whom I lost contact with. Also bumped into a friend from a different circle of friends. It was someone’s party. In that party, Pete’s cousin was there. Strange and small place to meet people. By about this time Pete was smashed and hitting on my friends. Surprised security didn’t kick him out.

Also bumped into the photographer, who was a friend whom I knew online but never met in Real Life. She recognized me with the Pippi Hair on. “James??”. Took me a few seconds to realize who she was. After that I got all the camera attention.. and I still can’t find pics of me!

Getting Glares
I was on the phone and finished the call. I walked back in and two girls stared at me and gave me dirties for no reason. I did nothing to provoke them. What the f##k?? Jealous of Pippi’s hair? Get over it.

Left around 2am, when the male:female ratio reached 10:1. I don’t think I could come back here again for a while.

The lead up: sisca invited me to join her friends at UN nightclub. We missed the guestlist deadline time, and we were asked to pay $15. Being asians, we refused to pay and went to scary canary.

About Scary Canary on Friday nights

Located on kent st, it is one medium sized room split into two distinct areas. The upper area is the dance floor area.

On one end is the podium with a nice orange backlight, the other end lounge areas. The lower deck is the bar area, apparently to recover. The floor is deckboard so you may dance there too.

Crowd is dominantly asian. Entry fee is $15, $10 if you had a discount pass. Music played is rnb.

Timeline

Long time no see On entering, i spot Eric, a friend from high school who i hadn’t seen for about 7 years. He was there for Friday night work drinks and some dancing. I wondered if there were any other people here i knew.

deja vu with jason
I walk on the dance floor area and spot jason the solo bum shaker! That guy is everywhere. Scary canary must be his regular friday night dance hang out. As usual he is up on a podium, surrounded by girls gone wild.

Hanging with the opposite sex

One of the annoying things is seeing so many guys crack onto your female friends. the girls love it. I guess its a form of jealousy.sisca was the only chick in our group so us boys had to watch out for her as she is cracked onto.

Siscas friends werent too keen with dancing with me. I guess i really didnt know them, and they didnt know me. I tried though! I did hog sisca whenever she was in the circle and it probably made them jealous. I did try buying them drinks, and one took a drink. They even refused a photo with me or on their own. Shame. Got to love politics on the dance floor. anyway moving on!

Bottle girl

Later in the night i hear yelling. I turn and see a psycho girl go up to some guy and started yelling at him. He looks dumbfounded. She was furious and got a bottle and wanted to swing it at him. She was stopped before it could happen. I caught me staring at her, and she gave me a death stare. I quickly looked the other way.

Music
It was just one dj that night i think. Well they didnt repeat any songs, so playlist wise it was great. Can’t complain about the songs, except for the sib sob love rnb songs, which i totally despise.

Atmosphere

Friendly crowd. The mc kept the crowd going and made the experience less boring. However it was a rainy friday, so there wasn’t as many people as you would usually see at scary when walking by. Lots of girls on the podium showing off their bodies.

Summary: Good night for rnb. Lots of men that night, so that was a bit of a downer. Dance floor area is limited. Drinks were a reasonable price. I’d go here if I was too lazy to go to any other asian place.
