Bounce @ Slide bar - The podium

Bounce @ Slide bar - The podium

Walked by here last month and it looked alright – Asians and RnB blasting out from the doors. Promoters said it was a monthly event, so I decided to check it out next time it was on – finally tonight the night has arrived! I got on the guestlist and brang some friends – so here we go!

Bounce @ Slide Bar
Assessment Time: 10:30PM – 02:30AM
Opening Hours: 10:00PM – unknown (probably 4:00AM)
Lockout: We left at 2:30 and were advised of lockout. Safe to assume that lockout is at 02:00AM
Website:
Occurence: Once a month. Check facebook for details.
Address: 41 Oxford St, Sydney
Dress Code / Door Policy: Standard collared shirt for guys, though it is ok to wear shirts. Stated that no hats were allowed to be worn, but I did see people wearing hats tonight.
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: Free before 11pm if on guestlist. $10 before midnight. $20 Otherwise.
Guestlist: I found the facebook event and added myself to the Facebook guestlist.
Inside: This reminds me of a similar layout to The Bank at Kings Cross. Walk into an open floor to hold about two hundred people. The floor includes an elevated dance platform in which the tiles light up and change colours. Bar to the left. DJ in the far right corner. Overhanging the bar is a balcony for private functions and what not, to hold about 60 people.
Cloak Room: Cloak room available but was not utilised tonight.
Bar: Did not use the bar tonight.
DJs: DJ Slim, Edo, Bonniez
Music: RnB, Korean Pop.
Crowd: A rare night where everybody is Asian. Dominantly Korean. A mix of locals and international students.
Entertainment: Runway modelling show, and a dance off on the elevated podium area. MC Jayddup to keep things going.
Atmosphere: Initially on entering there wasn’t anyone dancing on the podium. Around midnight it picked up quick and stayed pretty busy the rest of the night. It got very packed at around 1-1:30AM. Dark atmosphere adds to the mood and the crowd was pertty into most of the songs. It was pretty good.

Timeline:
Banned for 30 minutes for being honest
The doors have opened and we are being let in. The bouncer asks the standard ‘How are you?’ sobrierity question. I could have easily said, yes I’m fine, and be let in, as I don’t go red. But no, I decided to be friendly:
Bouncer: How are you?
James: I’m alright! Just a bit tipsy you know?
Bouncer: What did you say?
James: I’m alright! It was just a few drinks, just a little tipsy
Bouncer: Are you for real?
James: Yes, I won’t drink inside, I..
Bouncer: (cuts me off) Please step aside.

So here I am, standing outside of line while everybody looks at me. My friends went in ahead of me and are giving me ‘WTF?’ looks. I am told by security to walk it off and come back in 30 minutes. Far out brussel sprouts. I went to Puls8 @ Shark Hotel just a block away and danced for a bit there. It was ok for what it was – about 15 people were dancing. Finally I came back and was allowed back in. Victory!

Someone has to be first up on stage
There is no better feeling for me than to see an empty dancefloor. It is akin to walking through the desert for 500 miles in the soaring heat, skin dripping with sweat, your mouth dry and parched, just aching for water – your body about to collapse, and just as you are about to give up hope and let your body be taken over by the elements, you spot something in the distance – you do not find not only an oasis of refreshing, cool, succulent water, but also a huge dancefloor sized mat of BUBBLE WRAP for you to jump on! Nobody has been here yet and all bubbles are intact, ready to be popped!! You look in amazement – it looks so serene and beautiful – but someone has to get up and pop them bubbles! So I got my camera and reluctantly went up to record this momentous event… Drumroll please! *bom bom bom bom bom bom bom bom…*

A dance off
This part took a good 10 minutes off dancing time. We watched as the volunteers danced individually, then paired up as couples, and the crowd at the end would cheer for who was the most deserving. Of course the crowd cheers loudest for particular people but the MC would pick someone altogether different, just to be fair. It took up a good 10 minutes of time, where the DJ stops playing music and the entire crowd has to watch on.

Upstairs is definitely reserved
M went upstairs. M got kicked out by the birthday girls. Later after midnight the area was open for all.

Did not want a photo of braces
I am on a personal mission to take photos of anyone I see wearing braces. So what luck when I spot a girl with braces! Ask for a photo. She says no. Cover here eyes and just show the braces. Still no. She is taking her braces out NEXT WEEK and doesn’t want a final photo. Shameful. I love my braces. Well here’s a braces photo with a promoter I met outside:

Arrivederci
We left, as some friends were a bit tired. I would have happily stayed the rest of the night.

Recommendation
If you like all asian events, with the occasional K-Pop song thrown into your RnB music, then this is a good place to go. Friendly vibe and entertainment segments to keep things interesting as well. I never thought Slide Bar could be done so well but it has, and I’m happy for it.

Bounce @ Slide Bar – 9.0/10.

Yeah that dance off was full rigged!

The MC kept shouting something about “Metrosexuals” too which was distracting.

    Really great read! Honest.
