Saturday Nights @ Roxy – 21st July 2007

On July 21, 2007, in House, Roxy, by J T

After last night’s bad night at space, I was open to going to another club, but was feeling lazy and broke. Then suddenly an calls. He suggested we go to Roxy @ Parramatta. I jumped out of my seat and was raving to go.

I messaged everyone to come, but no. They did not share my enthusiasm and were all out doing their own Saturday night thing. I love last minute planning. So it was just me and an.

This should be fun..

About Roxy Saturdays

Where?
The Roxy Hotel,

ParramattaWebsite for pictures.

Cover Charge:
Tonight was $10. Wow. So cheap!
Guestlist: Free entry before 11pm. You need to book an ‘official event’ through Roxy, such as a birthday, to get a guestlist running.

Music:
Commercial house.

Clubbing area:
The Roxy is a big place. Half of it is an outdoors / restaurant area. The other half is the dance area. You walk up the stairs to the main clubbing area, whereby you are presented with a huge room split in two areas by a bar. One half is the dance floor and the other half is the carpeted lounge.
The dance floor is split into two sections. The left side has the DJ playing and people dancing. The other side also has people dancing around, but no DJ. It’s got chairs and stuff for people to sit down. So in general, there isn’t much surface area on the dance floor, but the venue atmosphere is so slick and nice you feel it’s quite busy.

Crowd and Atmosphere
Aussies and Euros. Everyone dressed looked real good and were pretty friendly. I think I only bumped into one drunk person in the toilet. He was raving on about the Long Island Tea he had and recommended I got one for myself.
Tonight wasn’t as packed, so the venue did have some scattered spots. Not empty enough though to scare you off. I think it was because next Saturday the Bang Gang DJ’s are coming to Roxy, so I am assuming people were saving their $20 to go to that instead.

Crowd

Tonight the crowd seemed more interested in chatting each other up, which was I guess half the reason why people go.

My Timeline

After seeing the Socceroos lose we head to the floor. The first thing an finds is a CD pack. I think it was the CD that they were launching that night. He pockets CD pack – Gold.

Music:
Sometimes the DJ lays on some song from any era and lays down some heavy bass. It’s a great refresher from the rnb clubs. He also plays the common commercial house songs. Very ministry of sound-like and very cool

Noticed, yay
So I climb up to the podium in the centre of the floor and start to dance freely. Oh it feels great. There are already other people opposite me in front of the DJ. Got a compliment from a random girl at the bar later. That was nice of her, though I really didn’t know what to say after that. Sigh.

Forget the number, that was so last century
We head back on the floor. These 2 girls do a little hand dance with me and one of them asks if I have Myspace. I sure do. She beckons for writing equipment, so I give her my phone and she enters her myspace url into my phone. Wait wait.. hold on – Giving someone your mobile phone so they can enter their myspace address ?? The mind boggles. Here’s a photo.

Dancing Resuscitation
Me and an were looking down from the lounge area. The crowd was dying. Nobody was dancing quite well to make this place look good. In fact, people were more or less just swaying and bopping to the music. I decided to do some dancing at the front podium. So once I saw a free spot in the front DJ podium, it was time to dance. I jumped right up there, hi 5’d my fellow podiumers and went nuts. . I managed to get attention of some crowd members and get them to mirror me, so it was a small victory.

Thank god I’m a dancer boy.
The blondie next to me told me: “I love how you love it!” (the act of dancing). I understood too well. She had about 3 or 4 guys climb up and openly grind and attempt to make out with her. I certainly wouldn’t love it 3 or 4 guys successively tried to grind with me, haha.

Clubbing or subliminal pick up?
There was this one particular brunette who was dancing in the lounge area. This was all she did onher own. She stood in this one prominent spot which, yes, got attention, but why not join the dance floor where more guys will crack onto you? Oh, that must be why. I went to her and told her that the dancefloor was downstairs. She smiled and acknowledged that she knew, yet kept on bopping. I can’t explain this behaviour – it’s probably her way of picking up classy guys? Maybe she had a bad experience on the floor when she was young. oh shit, her technique did work – I can’t stop blabbering about her!

Coda
an got his cds, I got my proper fix of clubbing to counter the horror that was Space the night before. We were both happy. We left 2am when the DJ started to play some mixed up house beats. Crowd was dying anyway.

Lessons Learned
Enjoy the dance because nobody gives a toss.
Create a myspace account if you don’t have one.

Summary
Roxy Saturday nights was great. Even though it wasn’t packed the music and venue more than made up for it. Would definitely recommend it to dance music aficionados living out west who are too lazy to head to the city.
